The CING x META-BRAIN Seminar Series returns on Thursday 29 October with its third online session, featuring Professor Krasimira Tsaneva-Atanasova from the University of Exeter (United Kingdom). Organised by META-BRAIN project partner Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING), the seminar will explore how mathematical and computational approaches can help explain brain dynamics, from individual neurons to interacting neural circuits.
Entitled “Modulating brain dynamics across scales: from neuronal excitability to interacting neural circuits”, the seminar will take place from 3–4 pm EET (Cyprus), 2–3 pm CET (Madrid, Berlin, Rome) and 1–2 pm GMT/WET (London, Lisbon).
Registration is available here.
Professor Tsaneva-Atanasova is Vice-President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Impact) at the University of Exeter and Professor of Mathematics for Healthcare in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Living Systems Institute. Her research focuses on applying mathematical modelling, analysis and advanced data analytics to address challenges in health and life sciences and develop quantitative methods for healthcare and healthcare technologies.
During the seminar, Professor Tsaneva-Atanasova will explore how neural circuits adapt their activity in response to physiological changes and external influences, a central challenge in computational neuroscience. Using neural circuits involved in reproductive function as a model system, she will illustrate how computational modelling, combined with experimental techniques, can help uncover the mechanisms underlying these adaptations.
The presentation will examine how changes in hypothalamic network excitability can regulate hormonal pulse activity, how hormonal modulation of ion-channel conductances reshapes neuronal firing patterns, and how amygdala circuits mediate the effects of stress on reproductive function.
Drawing on research combining electrophysiology, calcium imaging, computational modelling and optogenetic perturbations, the presentation will highlight how these approaches can connect mechanisms across different levels of neural organisation and help explain how biological perturbations reshape brain dynamics.
The CING x META-BRAIN Seminar Series is an online capacity-building initiative organised as part of CING’s knowledge exchange activities within the META-BRAIN project. It focuses on advances in computational neuroscience, including multi-scale modelling, neuromodulation and neural network dynamics.
