META-BRAIN will be represented at Graphene 2026, the largest European conference dedicated to graphene and 2D materials, through an invited presentation by Dr Anton Guimerà-Brunet from the Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red (CIBER). The event will take place from 30 June to 3 July 2026 at the Barceló Sants Hotel in Barcelona, Spain.
Now in its 16th edition, the Graphene Conference has established itself as a leading international meeting point for the global 2D materials community. The previous edition brought together more than 500 researchers, companies and industry leaders from around the world, highlighting the conference’s role in showcasing scientific advances, technological developments and emerging applications across a wide range of sectors.
Graphene neural interfaces for brain activity monitoring and neuromodulation
As part of META-BRAIN, Dr Guimerà-Brunet leads research activities focused on the development of graphene-based neural interfaces for monitoring brain activity and assessing responses to advanced stimulation technologies. His team develops flexible neural devices incorporating graphene microtransistors capable of providing stable long-term recordings and supporting high channel-count neural interfaces through multiplexed read-out strategies. He also leads research activities on advanced neural interfaces at the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM, CSIC) and is a member of CIBER-BBN.
On 1 July, Dr Guimerà-Brunet will deliver the invited presentation “Graphene-Based Bidirectional Neural Interfaces for Full-Bandwidth Brain Monitoring”, presenting recent advances in graphene-based neural interfaces, including flexible graphene solution-gated field-effect transistors (gSGFETs) capable of recording brain activity across a broad range of frequencies, as well as bidirectional systems that combine neural recording and stimulation within the same platform for advanced brain interfacing and neuromodulation.
The presentation is part of the workshop “2D Materials for Sensing, Biomedical Devices, and Healthcare Solutions”, which will explore the potential of 2D materials in biosensing, implantable medical devices and healthcare technologies. The session will examine how graphene and related materials are contributing to new biomedical applications, while also addressing challenges associated with clinical translation, safety and regulatory requirements.
Graphene 2026 is organised by a consortium of leading European research centres, universities and innovation organisations active in graphene and advanced materials research, including the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), The University of Manchester, RWTH Aachen University, UCLouvain, BeDimensional, the Centre for Advancing Electronics Dresden (CFAED), the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), AMO GmbH and the Phantoms Foundation.
META-BRAIN is a European research project coordinated by IDIBAPS and bringing together Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red (CIBER), Zabala Innovation, the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) and its institutes Istituto di Elettronica e di Ingegneria dell’Informazione e delle Telecomunicazioni CNR-IEIIT) and Istituto per la Microelettronica e Microsistemi (CNR-IMM), G.TEC Medical Engineering, ETH Zurich and the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING).. Together, the consortium is developing innovative technologies for monitoring and modulating brain activity with unprecedented spatial and temporal precision through magnetoelectric, ultrasound and graphene-enabled approaches.
